Andrew Wiand

Andrew Wiand was born in South Bend, Indiana. He received his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Notre Dame in 2011 as a Lilly Community Full Scholarship Recipient. Andrew then received his Master’s of Science from the Engineering, Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Excellence Master’s Program (ESTEEM) at Notre Dame in August 2012. During his time in ESTEEM, Andrew worked with Professor Steven Buechler, Department Head of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics, as well as Professor Amanda Hummon, Walther Cancer Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, to produce a viable business plan for an assay that allows health professionals to predict the potential for relapse in surgically-removed breast and colorectal tumors.In addition to his graduate research, Andrew worked with Dr. David Veselik to study the effects of anti-oxidants on biochemical growth pathways associated with cancer in 2011. Along with academic research and commercialization experience with ESTEEM, Andrew worked at Notre Dame in other disciplines, including REHS with the Quarknet High Energy Physics program in 2006, where he assisted in building components for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland. 

Andrew is also a talented musician; having competed internationally as a cellist, both as a soloist and as a member of the Hawthorne Quartet. He won the Regional Young Artist’s Competition in Michiana as soloist in 2006, and placed as a semi-finalist quartet in the Fischoff International Music Competition in 2005. Andrew has a strong passion for technological advancement and social entrepreneurship.

Andrew championed the South Bend Community School Corporation projects as Client Lead during the founding year of the enFocus Fellowship, presenting over $330,000 in cost savings and innovative implementation. His project management skills and entrepreneurial drive aided the founding group of Fellows to produce over $3 million dollars in value for the Michiana region.  Andrew is currently  a Senior Fellow with enFocus , aspiring to create a management structure to maximize efficiency for the growing Michiana Venture Fellowship
